When I am asked what I do for a living and I reply that I’m a Colour Consultant I often get a blank look. At that point I quickly follow up with an explanation of what it is that I do. So today I wanted to talk a little bit about what is a Colour Consultant and what the benefits are to working with one.
Just to give you a bit of my background, for over twenty years I worked in the Financial Industry. It was a challenging career but I loved it! At the same time I was working in the world of finance I realized I had a love of picking paint colours and just colour in general. I would often walk around with paint chips in my purse. While I was working full time I decided to attend Mount Royal University in the evenings to see if this passion was just a hobby or something I could turn into a career. I am now a graduate of the Mount Royal University Interior Decorating Extension Certificate program. I have also obtained my Certificate as a Certified Architectural Color Consultant (CACC1). Once I had these credentials under my belt I felt ready to take the leap and open my own Colour Consulting business.
What is a Colour Consultant?
Every colour consultant would probably have a different answer for you but to me it means being able to put together a harmonious colour palette. That can mean choosing paint colours for your interior or exterior that work with your existing surfaces. It can also be putting together a colour palette from scratch using fabrics, cabinets, counters, flooring etc. We are currently in the process of building a new home and the first thing I started with was my wall colour. From there it was easy to pick all the rest of the finishes including cabinets, flooring and backsplash. There are many things to consider when putting together a palette but some of the major ones are undertone, lighting and how the space is used.
Benefits to working with a Colour Consultant
Working with a colour consultant should be a very collaborate process. My job is to find the colours that will make you happy while working with your existing surfaces. Often when I work with a client they already have a general idea of the direction they want to go but just need some help getting there.
As a colour consultant I will come armed with large format colour samples. In order to truly see how the colours will look and feel in your space a 2″x2″ paint chip won’t be helpful.
A colour consultant will show you options that you never thought of before. It’s always fun when my client and I have put together a palette that they love, but would never have thought to put together themselves.
Colour consultants love their job! I have never regretted leaving the Financial Industry to pursue a career as a colour consultant. I really enjoy working with and meeting new clients. Picking colours should be a fun process.
I think the biggest benefit to working with a colour consultant is the time and money you will ultimately save getting your colour palette right the first time.
